In June 2013, Design Miami/ Basel, the global forum for design, will mark it’s 8th edition with a move to Hall 1 Süd, part of the new permanent exhibition hall designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. The grand and expansive building is centrally situated on the Messeplatz, Basel’s exhibition square.
“While our former hall offers a striking exhibition space with strong character, space is limited. Moving to Hall 1 Süd allows the fair to further develop its gallery programme and initiate site-specific design projects in a state-of-the-art space,” says Marianne Goebl, the fair’s director.
This new venue enhances the list of architecturally intriguing spaces occupied by the fair. The first Design Miami/ Basel in 2006 took place in the gothic Elisabethen church and the Basel theatre, followed by two years in the Markthalle, Europe’s largest concrete dome, in 2007 and 2008. The fair has taken place in industrial Hall 5 for the last four years, from 2009 to 2012.
“The new building marks a milestone in the long and successful history of Basel as an exhibition centre of international renown – not only in respect of its operating functionality and the comfort offered to visitors but also in architectural terms,” says René Kamm, CEO of the MCH group, a shareholder in Design Miami/. “This infrastructure will now make it possible to grow shows like Design Miami/ Basel and ensure their successful further development.” This year, Hall 1 Süd will provide a larger and electrifying space for the fair, one to match the brilliance of the designers and work being shown.
Design Miami/ Basel will run from June 11-16, 2013.
