Baz Luhrmann Designing Interiors, Uniforms For Saxony Hotel
Curbed Miami
by Sean McCaughan
Vanity Fair just revealed the mystery project that movie-maker Baz Luhrmann and his costumes-and-set designer/wife Catherine Martin are working on for Alan Faena, and it’s not such a mystery at all. The pair is going to be doing the interiors, uniforms, and ‘cultural programming’ for the historic Saxony Hotel, the heart of Faena’s giant Midbeach development. The level to which the pair immersed themselves into the project sounds extraordinary. “He and Martin started by doing in-depth research, and even interviewed the sons of George Sax. (Sax was a prominent banker and founder of the Saxony, which was completed in 1948 as one of the first luxury hotels on Miami Beach.)” according to Vanity Fair.
This, of course, begs the question “what about Roman & Williams? Aren’t they doing it?” Either they’ve been canned from the job or they’re (more likely) working with Baz and Cat. A pair of movie makers known for theirincredible cinematic spectacles and spectacular sets teamed up with designers known for buildings dripping in immersive, historical, romantic, hipster/steampunk fantasias to work on a bonkers Miami Beach Hotel with its own rich history? Wow.
