Design District Launches Site Showing Its Glorious Future

The Miami Design District has launched a site with renderings, construction updates, an interactive map, and a video tour showing off its future. Most of it centers around the southern half, which centers around the Palm Court, because this is the area currently under construction. In the middle will be R. Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Dome with Sou Fujimoto’s two level arcade beyond. The former Plummer Alley will be extended and renamed Paseo Ponti, and buildings by all sorts of different designers are being constructed. But wait, there’s way more…

  • The Fly’s Eye Dome will be the entrance to the underground parking deck. The circular staircase descending below the dome is in the foreground with Fujimoto’s arcade in the rear. “This image shows the southernmost end of the Paseo Ponti pedestrian walkway, which will cross 38th to 42nd streets. The project was the first in Miami to be awarded Gold LEED-ND (Neighborhood Design) by the U.S. Green Building Council. At the most southern point of Paseo Ponti, the walkway will end in Palm Court, which is pictured here with a prototype of Buckminster Fuller’s 24-foot Fly’s Eye Dome.”
  • The Sou Fujimoto-designed shopping arcade, which is meant to evoke a ‘structured waterfall’. “A mixed-use retail building located in Palm Court will feature a façade designed by award winning Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. Inspired by the flowing movement of waterfalls and Miami’s rain, the building’s two-floor structure will feature an elongated series of glass fins extending from the rooftop down to the courtyard creating a dynamic visual spectacle and alluding to the prevalent aquatic nature of the city.”
  • Shopping happens beneath the waterfall.

  • Inside the entrance to the underground parking deck.
  • To the east of Sou Fujimoto’s building is an elevated event space by Aranda/Lasch, with a commanding view of the Design District. “The 5,000 square foot event space by design team Aranda/Lasch is perched above the surrounding buildings with a commanding view of the district. A custom system of folding hardwood doors react completely to create a seamless outdoor environment only possible in Miami. All together the building’s bold structure, floral decoration and airy openness combine to make a uniquely Floridian space.”

  • This is the Palm Court, looking west.
  • On the south east corner of 40th Street and 1st Avenue “For the retail JBL Building, architects K/R conceived the façade design as a continuous wall of specialty brick with commercial spaces carved out from it. K/R’s bold design will allow for the draw and appeal of each retailer’s custom façade with appropriate rhythm and separation between them.” (K/R is Keenan Riley Architects)
  • “The retail building by design duo Aranda/Lasch is a new commercial space in the Miami Design District which will house four luxury retail tenants including Tom Ford. Inspired by the pleated Art Deco patterns found in architecture and fashion, the new building is given a contemporary texture that evokes the theatrical exuberance and luxurious ornament of Miami’s golden era.”
  • “Iwamoto Scott’s City View façade wraps around the South East corner of the garage and encompasses an elevator lobby, exterior stair and office block. The façade forms a tessellated mural that strategically conceals the parking slabs behind while allowing for natural ventilation. Iwamoto Scott is an award winning architecture and design firm established by Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott in 2000.”
  • “Leong Leong has been commissioned to design the West façade of the City View Garage, which explores the relationship between material efficiency and atmospheric effects. The technique of cutting and folding is applied to series gold Titanium Coated stainless steel panels, which generates a shimmering visual pattern, evoking a foliage-like pattern.”
