In the low-key Florida Keys, the condo-hotel concept never really caught on. The sun-bleached signs for the Playa Cristal in Key Largo are a testament to this — not enough of the planned 92 high-end units sold and the developer went belly-up, ensnared in a $40 million foreclosure lawsuit, the Herald reported.
That unhappy ending hasn’t deterred a new set of developers, who purchased the same parcel, once home to the American Outdoors RV Park, with grandiose plans of their own for a 15-building hotel and 160 parking spaces under the banner of Marriott’s boutique-y Autograph Collection on the 14-acre bayfront property. The question remains: If they build it, will anyone come? A renovated RV park might have more luck on that particular stretch of U.S. 1.
