Miami Beach Restaurants Among the Best in the Country
Joe’s Stone Crab is perhaps the most well-known of Miami Beach’s numerous restaurants. Joe Weiss opened the restaurant in 1913 and today it is among the most frequented and recognized eateries in the barrier island. Amusingly, the restaurant started off selling fish after Weiss incorrectly believed that patrons would not eat stone crab. Today Joe’s Stone Crab remains the top stone crab claw buyer in the state, and it has since become a major player in the industry, playing a role in crabber financing and wholesale prices. It’s not unusual to see politicians, athletes, or movie stars having a meal here.
Just how popular is Joe’s Stone Crab? It was recently named among the top five of the 100 highest grossing independent restaurants in the United States, with more than $35 million in gross sales last year. The restaurant has served over 340,000 meals with the average person paying about $85.
Joe’s Stone Crab wasn’t the only restaurant to crack the list of independent eateries. Prime 112 on Ocean Drive came in at number nine with $23.5 million in sales while Makoto in Bal Harbour, known for its sushi and various Asian dishes grossed $12.4 million and came in at number 92.
