When it comes to real estate and the recession, South Florida, and Miami in particular, has endured some notoriously rough blows. As conditions slowly start to improve and the downtown area begins to attract more crowd-drawing hotels, restaurants and bars, experts are beginning to change their tune about the future of “Where Worlds Meet.”
The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s Official Economic Development Partnership, recently reported that Miami has been ranked as one of the Top Ten American Cities of the Future, according to fDi (Foreign Direct Investment) Magazine. Each year, fDi independently researches over 100 cities for its annual ranking, appearing in the April 2011 issue of the magazine. Cities of all population sizes from both North and South Americas are ranked, and making the top ten is a tremendous honor.
Overall, Miami received the number 9 spot of cities across the Americas. The city ranked #2 for Business Friendliness, #3 for Foreign Direct Investment Promotion Strategy and #10 for Best Infrastructure Among Major Cities, according to the Beacon report. For the 2010 year, Miami was one of the top two growth cities in North America for foreign direct investment, with a 26 percent growth over 2009 in inbound project numbers, according to fDi. The Beacon report notes, “Florida experienced its best year for foreign direct investment attraction since the magazine’s records began in 2003.” Last year, the number of projects rose from 67 percent to 72 percent, with Florida receiving 5 percent of foreign direct investment into North America.
