Renderings (Old And New) Drop Of Richard Meier’s Surf Club

Two fresh renderings featuring the smooth starchitecture stylings of Richard Meier came wrapped together with a press release today announcing the Surf Club‘s new sales and marketing team. With all due respect to the new team (it’s Corcoran Sunshine Marketing Group), the chance to see a bit more of the design, a sizable modernist addition by the world renowned Meier to an historic Mediterranean Revival private club which has been kept very much under wraps, steals the show here. The last good look we had at the design was rather underwhelming and, we were told, seriously out of date.

Although we’ve seen the front facade rendering before (after the jump), a new rendering shows the Surf Club from the ocean side. An articulated row of glassy rectangular towers rises into the sky, below which you can see the spanish barrel tile roof of the old club designed in 1930 by Russell Pancoast, the reconstructed cabanas, and long rows of palm trees (placed by the project’s landscape architect Fernando Wong) running along the ocean side of the building. Although the project is supposed to be designed so as not to overwhelm the original building, the rendering apparently doesn’t agree.
